Stereoscopy applied to the screen
The goal is to trick the visual system by displaying two separate images on a flat surface. This is called a stereoscopic pair.
Golden rule: To be merged by the brain, the offset between the two images must be strictly horizontal. Vertical disparity is prohibited because it causes immediate visual fatigue (the brain cannot compensate for it).
Image acquisition
There are two classic methods for obtaining this pair:
- Simultaneous capture: Two cameras mounted side by side.
- Sequential capture: A single camera moved laterally between two shots. This is the method used in aerial imaging: the aircraft travels a distance (called the stereoscopic baseline) between two shots.
